The Gene R. Urey Memorial Scholarship
Established in 1999 by family, friends and former students, this scholarship honors the memory of Gene R. Urey, professor of political science at Susquehanna University from 1965-1999, and awards students who demonstrate superior critical thinking and analysis in the study of constitutional law.
2025 Scholarship Participants
Bailey Blaschak ’25
Bailey Blaschak, from Dillsburg, Pennsylvania, is a senior legal studies major. In addition to his academic pursuits, he was a four-year member of the football team. Throughout his time at Susquehanna, Bailey has completed internships with the Union County Public Defender’s Office, the Pennsylvania Department of Corrections’ Bureau of Reentry Coordination and Magisterial District Court 08-3-04, gaining hands-on experience in various facets of the U.S. justice system. These experiences have helped him develop leadership, critical thinking and problem-solving skills. Upon graduating in May, Bailey plans to pursue a career in law enforcement, aiming to positively impact his community by serving as a police officer.
Jonathan Ulicny ’27
Jonathan Ulicny, from Tamaqua, Pennsylvania, is a sophomore legal studies major with a minor in management. He is also a member of the pre-law and honors programs. Jonathan was an active participant in his high school and community. While at Susquehanna, he has maintained a place on the Dean’s List each semester and participates in several clubs and organizations. He has taken leadership roles in many, including as parliamentarian of the Student Government Association, treasurer of the Pre-Law Society and recruitment chair of the Theta Chi fraternity. Beyond his extracurricular involvement, Jonathan holds employed positions in the Leadership & Engagement Office, the Department of Political Science and the Union County Public Defender’s Office. After his undergraduate studies, Jonathan plans to attend law school before becoming a practicing attorney.

Mahmoud v. Taylor
Determining whether public schools burden parents’ religious exercise when they compel elementary school children to participate in instruction on gender and sexuality against their parents’ religious convictions and without notice or opportunity to opt out.
